Nursing Informatics Fellowship Program
Vision Statement
Nursing informaticists (NI) create innovative technological solutions that enable clinicians to provide safe, high quality care for patients, families and the community.
Purpose
This one-year program will provide UCLA Health nurses with an opportunity to discover the world of nursing informatics through classes, practical experience and mentoring by a Nursing Informaticist. After the first year, there may be an opportunity for Nursing Informatics Fellows to work alongside Nurse Informaticists for up to one additional year.
Goals
- Provide nurses with an opportunity to experience and learn about nursing informatics through mentoring from NIs and practical experience completing a project using the system development lifecycle.
- Improve safety, quality, and efficiency by developing and implementing optimization projects that leverage CareConnect or other technologies.
- Provide NIs with the opportunity to share expertise in nursing informatics through mentoring.
Experiences
Increase knowledge of nursing informatics by:
- Attending monthly Nursing Informatics Learning Series sessions, provided by NIs and other content experts, in-person. Review session dates and times below.
- Developing a project to optimize the use of CareConnect with the assistance of an NI
- Meeting with ISS team members to identify ways to improve CareConnect
- Attending governance meetings
- Assist with testing, developing educational material and training
- Presenting project to nursing leadership and staff
Eligibility Requirements
Required
Important: only UCLA Health RNs are eligible to apply. No exceptions.
- Current employee of UCLA Health
- Minimum of 3 years nursing experience
- Minimum of 1 year of employment at UCLA Health
- Employed at 50% or more time base
- Demonstrates readiness for leadership
- Strong interest in Nursing Informatics
- Time commitment of 8 hours per month
- Must be able to attend 90% of the monthly Nursing Informatics Learning Series sessions in-person
- Able and willing to support a nursing informatics project that may be based in a clinical area other than the applicant's current practice setting
- Support from manager to participate
Highly Desirable
- Experience leading change or championing change
- Super User experience

Nursing Informatics Learning Series
Fellows are required to attend the monthly educational sessions listed below in person. These classes, provided by NIs and other content experts, provide a clear, practical overview of how nursing informatics supports safe, efficient and high-quality patient care, and offer pathways for involvement. Topics covered range from optimizing EHR workflows to future trends in Nursing Informatics practice.
