UCLA Health’s Data Governance program initiated in October of 2016 with the acquisition of Collibra, a data governance platform solution intended to help data analysts, programmers, data scientists and researchers find, understand and trust data.  Over the past few years we’ve enabled critical use cases in partnership and with support of leaders throughout the health sciences.  Today, 120 users log into Collibra every month to search, curate and request access to data for their analytics needs; a number that will continue to grow with the complexity and availability of data.

About our Data Governance Program and Initiatives

Over the past few years our program has extended to support the following Health Sciences initiatives leveraging Collibra’s platform, workflow development framework and integration capabilities including some of the following:

Access and Adoption of Health Sciences Data and Tools

  • Compliance Access Request Tool – Enables health sciences users to request access to data and tools through a paperless process with approval routing to Compliance and daily Service Now integration for provisioning
  • Request to download and interface restricted information (RIDRI) – Enables health sciences users to submit requests to download forms through Collibra for routing and facilitation to Compliance

Catalog and Metadata Collection and Curation

  • UReport Catalog – Centralized and searchable repository for reports and dashboards with a monthly synchronization of critical Infoview, RWB and Radar dashboards
  • Data Mart Data Dictionaries – Centralization of Foundational Data Mart data dictionaries for end users and weekly synchronization of table and column metadata
  • Data Set Catalog – Central governed list of available on premise and cloud data sets managed closely by the Self Service Analytics team and Data Governance teams to support downstream approvals and provisioning

Enterprise Business Terms and Measure Standardization

  • Enterprise Measure Stewardship – Customized set of Collibra assets to capture critical definitions, value sets, business rules, roles related to enterprise and local center of excellence driven quality measure efforts
  • Enterprise Measure Engine Integration – Nightly integration of governed metadata from Collibra into xDR’s enterprise measure engine SQL database to drive and standardize programming activities
  • Enterprise Measure Encyclopedia – Central repository to search existing measures, business terms and value sets to enable content sharing and streamline development
  • Cross Functional Governance and Communication
    • Facilitate Communication to Centers of Excellence for important initiatives that impact downstream analytics content (new locations, new CC codes, etc)
    • Facilitate Internal Communication to streamline and collect critical policies and rules for data usage

Data Quality and Master Data Management

  • Patient Matching Data Quality Framework – Maintain and communicate the patient matching quality rules leveraged by OHIA for evaluating the quality of matches generated for data sourced outside of CareConnect. (e.g. ACO data, mortality data, etc)

Expanding and Sustaining Collibra Capabilities

  • Upgrades and Feature Releases – As Collibra releases new versions and features, our team explores those to prioritize and bring them to our users.  Features under evaluation (Tableau Integration to Collibra, Data Profiling, Data Lineage and more…)
