Making Full Use of Secondary Data with IPUMS
Research Tech Talks

Population-level data from censuses and long-standing surveys have enormous potential for health research. They provide large sample sizes, measures of social determinants of health over a relatively long timespan, and the demographic identifiers necessary for examining trends and disparities among population subgroups. However, working with secondary population data often requires addressing change over time, parsing complex and siloed documentation, and managing many data files. IPUMS enhances the value of secondary population data through harmonization, data enhancements, integrated documentation, and a data access system that allows users to build customized datasets that include only the samples and variables they need for their analyses. Learn about the harmonized data available from IPUMS and the tools that IPUMS offers to increase the accessibility of secondary data.
